Ms. Lauryn Hill: Ravinia Concert Review

Last night, who knew what to expect from Lauryn Hills’s, Ravinia concert. Ms. Hill has been extremely late or a no-show for many concert dates over the last few years. Also, unbeknownst to me, until I arrived at Ravinia, the website had been updated to include a “theme,” opening acts and a start time that varied from the ticket. So, L. was not late, there were three acts (plus her DJ) before her! Possibly Ravinia should have sent out an email of the update, but really would they have done that for anyone else? I’ve been to enough concerts in […]

Jill Scott, Golden and New Moon…

At the beginning of August I went to the Jill Scott concert, with special guest Georgia Me, at the Horseshoe Venue in Hammond, IN. I got there early enough to have dinner. What I remember most is the seaweed salad, it was yumster. While eating dinner the lights flickered and then went out. The backup generator came on quickly, and I didn’t think anything about it other than, uhn, interesting. Finished off my meal with dessert and as I was savoring it, I saw someone I knew. Oh, to be young and stupid again. NOT, I have no desire to […]

Concert Review: Eric Roberson

8.25.16 @ City Winery, Chicago Dear Eric Roberson and ‘nem, Often I’m that person who has plans to go out, but if it’s not on the way home or immediately after work, I um, sorta kinda don’t make it. Lol lol lol. I’m a cancer (zodiac sign) and I enjoy hanging out in my cancer shell. Today, all I really wanted to do was go get some sweet potato tempura maki rolls and a Thai tea iced tea and watch Netflix, but I made myself come see you, Phonte, D.Mo, Corey and the rest of the band. And let me […]

“I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my ish…” Baduizm

(Unedited and nonlinear) About last night. V103 Summer Block Party headlining E. Badu and guests: Jazmine Sullivan, SWV, Tank and Guordan Banks. On the lake! The breeze at Northerly Island, Erykah Badu’s words/presence and my peace of mind were freed with the morphing of “Cleva,” into Roger Troutman and Zapp Band’s, “It’s Going to be Alright”—with the spirit of Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright.” The fluidity of the collective alrightness to the personal, “alright with me.” The ebb of “Didn’t Cha Know’s,” there will be a brighter day into the timelessness of “Believe” from the Wiz. She builds upon traditions and musical […]
